Weldon "Slim"
Herbert Phipps
September 18, 1935 – May 28, 2020
Weldon Herbert " Slim" Phipps, age 84 peacefully departed this life on Thursday, May 28, 2020. Weldon was born September 18, 1935 in Woodlawn, VA to the late Effie and Harvey Phipps. He was the youngest of six children. Spoiled by all his siblings. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother and 3 sisters.
Weldon the cleanest and sharpest man I know, received his education in Bethany School System. After graduating, he joined the U.S. Air Force, fought in the Korean war and was honorably discharged. Weldon took much pride in his physical appearance. No stepping out without his fancy suits and shoes. Til the bitter end and our last encounter, he wanted his fresh cut and shave.
In 1973 Weldon and wife, Iola were united in marriage. No children were born to this union; however, he adopted 3 beautiful children that he cared for like they were his own.
After Weldon's stint in the military; near death encounter from cirrhosis of the liver, where we've all heard his testimony (not one, but a thousand times) of how God spared his life and that he vowed he'd never take another drink in his life. He was proud of that and his relationship with the Lord. God honored their vow and did just that and allowed him to live a long prosperous life. He became owner of the Riteway Shoe Shop where he gave to the community. No doubt, he gave more than he made. He was a giver and I believe we can all testify to that. Of what he gave; shoes, money, beautiful smiles, hugs and/or Love. A very talented craftsman; who is smiling on us today. Because he's made it with that great cloud of witnesses and don't we know they're having a joyous time.
He accepted Christ mid-life and joined Mt. Zion Holiness where he was a loyal member. In addition to being devoted member, he was a deacon where he served tirelessly to keep the house of God clean and functioning at it's best. Weldon later joined Riverhill Baptist Church where he was a faithful member until health no longer permitted.
He leaves to cherish his memory three children – Pandoria (Terry) Henry of Galax, Virginia, Lesia Brown of Galax, Virginia, Christopher (Margaret) of Galax, Virginia, two grandchildren; Devon and Darius and two great grandchildren; Kayson and Julian; one sister, Roberta Jefferson of Denver, Colorado and a host of niece and nephews and relatives and friends. Much Love and Gratitude to Lesia and Chris who took care of our Beloved Uncle over the years. We appreciate you both!
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 2:00 PM in the Bethany Cemetery with Bishop Barry Early and Bishop Sidney Beamer officiating.
