Virginia Edith Leonard Sutherland age 102 of Galax, Virginia passed away from this life on Wednesday, March 6, 2019 peacefully at her home surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Sutherland was born on November 18, 1916 in Grayson County, Virginia to John Perry Leonard and Mary Elizabeth Roberts Leonard. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Tom Jefferson  (T.J.) Sutherland; son Clarence Wayne Sutherland; two daughters-in-law; two sons-in-law; a grandson; six brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by daughters and son-in-law Barbara Russell of Galax, Virginia; Debbie and   Dewayne Creed of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina; sons and daughters-in-law Kenneth Sutherland of Spanaway, Washington; Carroll and Sandy Sutherland of Cumming, Georgia; Tom and Debbie Sutherland of Montgomery, Alabama; Harold and Ann Sutherland of Galax, Virginia; fifteen grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren;  several step-grandchildren; several  step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; caregiver Angela Baldwin Freeman.

Edith loved the Lord and her children would often hear her singing hymns while she worked around the house. She was an avid gardener and often shared her summer flower arrangements with her church family at Locust Grove. She loved to sew, quilt and crochet and then share her quilts and afghans with her family. She NEVER "ate the bread of idleness." Her children rise up and call her blessed. "And as a Godly woman who feared the Lord, she shall be praised."

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 3:00 PM in the Locust Grove Church of Christ, 1095 Fries Road, Galax, Virginia with Craig Embree, Guy Russell and Tom Sutherland officiating. Burial will follow in the Monta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:30 PM until time for the funeral service at the Locust Grove Church of Christ. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the charity of the donor's choice.
