Obituary

Verna Cox Kenyon passed away Tuesday, July 17, 2007 at her home on Coal Creek Road where she had made her home the past few years. She was born on March 15,1908 in Carroll County, Virginia. She was preceded in death by husband, Kenneth, step-daughter, Susan Kenyon, her parents, John S. & Laua Cox and ten of her brothers and sisters.They were Jerome, Guy, Elmer, Pearl, Lora, Jeff, Edna, Clyde, Dean and Woodrow. She was the ninth of eleven children. Surviving are two sisters-in-law, Marguerite Cox of Newark, De. and Winnie Cox of Galax, Va; and many nieces and nephews. She also leaves special friend, Charlotte Lawarence, along with others in that family and several other dedicated friends. Her last years were spent near her beloved home on Coal Creek Road, Galax where she was born. Following her father's words when she left home at age nineteen to pursue her career--to "Be Somebody", she and her husband later went on to become owners of the Waumbek, a resort hotel in New Hampshire. They spent summers there and winters in Pompano Beach where they managed the Hillsboro Club. Verna was an avid collector of antiques which filled their New Hampshire home. She was an accomplished golfer and played with notables in the sport.
