Obituary

Homer Thomasine Calloway Lemons, 98, passed away peacefully in her sleep at Shenandoah House in Fishersville, VA on August 24, 2024.  She was born on January 10,1926 in Galax, VA and lived a full and loving life.

After graduating from Madison College, she married the love of her life, John Lemons. They were married for 59 years and lived 80 years in Galax before moving to Waynesboro, VA to be closer to their family.

She was proud of her 2 sons and their families, Lowell (Linda) and Phil (Maryellen), 6 grandchildren Scott (Skylar), Christine, Phillip, Ben (Stephanie), Erin (Dennis) and Andy (Denyse), 13 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She was an enthusiastic supporter of her family and attended as many sporting events, school activities, dance recitals, plays, baptisms, confirmations, and marriages as she could. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Ballard and many nieces and nephews.

She lived a very productive personal and professional life always guided by her Christian faith. As a lifelong member of First Baptist Church in Galax, VA, she was committed to many ministries including organizing the Sunshine Group, singing in the choir, and being elected to serve as a Deacon. When she moved to Waynesboro, VA she attended her children's churches as well as visits to the Baptist church.

She taught art and biology for 30 years at Galax High School. She loved all media of art and tried her hand at photography and ceramics. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society for female educators, and served as president of the Galax Education Association.

When the wheels were rolling, she was in the car.  She loved to travel and went overseas many times as well as traveled across America. She would be sure to read the signs to you in case you did not see them.

For the last 17 years she resided at Summit Square Retirement Community in Waynesboro. She immersed herself in the activities there and especially enjoyed meeting new friends while putting puzzles together, playing BINGO, or going on a country ride.
