Swanson Eugene Dowling 82, died on Monday, August 23rd following a struggle with Alzheimer's Disease and a brief stay at Corsica Hills in Centreville, Maryland.

He is survived by his son Swanson Gregory, wife Amy, and granddaughter Autumn Sophia Dowling of Huntington, Maryland, and by his daughter Stephanie Dowling and partner Dwight Barry of Jefferson, Maryland. Swanson is also survived by his brother Robert Buford and wife Rosalyn Dowling of Locust Grove, Virginia, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his sister Janice, brother David, and parents Robert Bernard and Georgia Inez Black Dowling.

Swanson enjoyed playing football and baseball while attending Fries High School and graduated in 1958. He was stationed in Germany for a time during his service in the U.S. Army from 1960-1964. He then began his career in law enforcement, eventually serving with the Virginia State Police for over 30 years and retiring as a Master Trooper. Much of that time he resided in Highland County, Virginia where he also operated a small family farm.

Swanson's favorite pastimes included reading, listening to bluegrass and country music, horses, sports, hunting, golfing, and billiards, a game he was skilled at and enjoyed playing up until the last year of his life.

Swanson will be missed and remembered with love. Memorial contributions may be made to the Virginia State Police Association or the Alzheimer's Association.

The funeral service will be held Monday, August 30, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Pastor Rick Clark officiating . Burial will follow in the Stevens Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 10:00 AM until time for the funeral service at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
