Susan Arlene George Burnett

August 24, 1942 – January 21, 2022

Susan Arlene George Burnett 79 of Galax VA, formerly of Madison County VA was the only child of the late Lt. Col. Athol Warren George (Retired US Army) and Thelma Doris Packer George.  She was born at Harrisburg Military Post in Dauphin, PA and passed away at New River Valley Medical Center in Radford VA.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 44 years, John Vaughn Burnett.

As a child Sue grew up in Germany, Hawaii and Illinois until her military family settled in Petersburg VA for her last three years of high school.  After marring John on November 25, 1961, they eventually settled in Madison County VA to raise their children.  Sue stayed busy over the years serving as a Cub Scout den mother, a Girl Scout leader, Girl Scout Service Unit Manager and cookie chairman.  She was also a Sunday school teacher and managed to always get her children to and from all the activities they were involved in and always had a hot meal on the table for dinner.  Her grandchildren like to remember her silly sense of humor and fun story telling about her life experiences and family members from long ago.  Besides being an involved mother, she enjoyed cruises, quilting, sewing, needlework, reading and taking care of her plants.  She was an avid animal lover and rescued many over the years.  Feeding and watching the birds was also a favorite of hers.  She retired from Schewels Furniture Company in 2007. Sue was a member of the Montpelier Chapter of the DAR since 2013 and a long-time member of Piedmont Episcopal Church.

She is survived by her children, son Timothy Warren Burnett and daughters, Nancy Elizabeth Burnett Davis (Betsy) and her husband Tim Davis, and Lisa Christine Burnett Gardiner and her husband Tony Gardiner.

Grandchildren: Bryan Taylor, Christopher Burnett, Samantha Burnett, Sydney Burnett, Lucas Burnett, Matthew Burnett, Nicholas Davis, Susan Davis, Breanna Gardiner and Jacob Gardiner.

And one Great Grandchild Braxton Burnett.

Special Friends: Lois Jenkins, Karen Lohr, Lee Crigler, Chris Tinklenberg and Wendy O'Neil.

A memorial service will be held at Piedmont Episcopal Church, 214 Church Street, Madison VA 22727, on February 12, 2022, at 1:00 PM, with The Reverend Brad Jackson and The Reverend Anne West officiating with a reception following the service in the fellowship hall.  A private interment will be at Concord Cemetery in Belington WV at a later date.
