Shelby Boyer
Singleton
January 28, 1947 – June 29, 2025
Shelby Boyer Singleton, age 78, died peacefully on June 29, 2025 in her Galax, VA residence after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was born on January 28, 1947 to the late John and Rubye Boyer in Galax, VA.
In addition to her parents, Shelby was preceded in death by her beloved husband George Singleton, grandson Jared Hammerman, close companion Edward "Chick" Cavanaugh, and former husband Robert Morris.
She is survived by her son Bob Morris (Latrelle) of Jacksonville, FL, daughter Lisa Singleton Hammerman (Ted) of Myrtle Beach, SC, son George "Bogie" Singleton (Jo Anne) of Josephine, TX, grandson Bobby Morris of Orlando, FL, granddaughter Sheina Hammerman Fredericks (Sean) and great grandsons Donovan and Thomas Fredericks of Myrtle Beach, SC, loving sisters Trish Dingus (James) and Mary Davis (John) of Galax, VA, nephew Baine Dingus of Defiance, OH, and nieces Heather Holt (Nick) and Jennifer Huff (Josh) of Galax, VA.
Although a mountain girl at heart, Shelby married George in 1977 and along with "little Bob" made her way to Surfside Beach, SC where she quickly fell in love with the beach lifestyle. She had a career in advertising for Belk department stores where she designed print and television campaigns for their Myrtle Beach location before joining Oneida Flatware as a retail sales associate. Away from work, she enjoyed sunbathing, beach walks, gardening, bird watching, and volunteering at Brookgreen Gardens.
Later in life she devoted herself to being a caregiver through George's long-fought cancer battle and after that took care of her father John during his fight with heart disease. She then formed a great friendship with Chick Cavanaugh and once again served through his decline due to lung disease. To say she was an angel placed on earth for this purpose would be an understatement.
She recently found joy through a return to her childhood home in Galax, VA to live with her sister Trish and spend time with Mary and family but God's plan cut it short. While she may not have understood the "why" she did pass with unbelievable grace and a great love for the Lord. Her wishes were to be cremated with ashes to be spread later.
Shelby received the best of care from Dr. George Yacoub and his wonderful staff at Wake Forest Baptist in Mt. Airy, NC, the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, and Mountain Valley Hospice of Mt. Airy. The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to these organizations to help treat others impacted by cancer.
