Sammie Faye (Rakes) Stoneman, 86, of Galax passed away on Thursday, July 28, 2016.
She was born in Carroll County on May 16, 1930, to the late Samuel Lee and Lillie Mae Rakes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce J. Stoneman, as well as her parents. Survivors include one daughter, Linda S. Richardson of Galax; one grandson and spouse, Stephen J. and Janet Richardson of Woodlawn; three half-sisters and their spouses, Belva and Jim Durel of Auburn, California; Joan and J.G. Carico, Jr. of Galax; Doris and Tom Norton of Knoxville, Tennessee; several nieces and nephews; and special friend and caregiver,
Pat Norman Bowers.
Mrs. Stoneman was a long-time member of Oakland United Methodist Church, where she had once been a Sunday School teacher and faithful member of the sanctuary choir. She was for many years a seamstress at Globman's Department Store in Galax, where she developed many life-long friendships and associations.
The family received friends from 1:00 until 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 31, 2016, at Oakland United Methodist Church, Galax. The Reverend Tim Smith officiated. Interment was held in Monta Vista Memory Gardens in Galax. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Oakland United Methodist Church, 4987 Pipers Gap Road, Galax, VA 24333. Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
