Sam Preston Shaffer age 83 of Walkertown, North Carolina passed away Sunday, June 29, 2025 in the Brook Ridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Mr. Shaffer was born on October 10, 1941 in Galax, Virginia to Frank and Gladys Nelson Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer had four sisters and one brother.
Mr. Shaffer loved to drive. He raced at Bowman Gray Stadium for a while during the early 70's. Then in 1975 he had the opportunity to race for NASCAR's Baby Grand Series where he raced for another 3 years. He also owned his own business, Shaffer TV Sales and Service in Kernersville, North Carolina. He sold and serviced electronics in the Triad area for over 25 years. He was also a ham radio operator for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed talking to other hams over the radio. He served his country in the United States Army from 1962 until 1968 where he was ranked Staff Sergeant. While in the military he served at Fort Knox Kentucky where he was a cook, a marksman and a driver for a general on the base.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years Carol Amburn Shaffer; children and spouses Teresa Shaffer (Leslie); Shawn Shaffer (Charlotte) all of Walkertown, North Carolina; sisters Lorene Barnes of Sparta, North Carolina; Shirley Sweeney of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren Andrew Shaffer; Lydia Shaffer and Hailey Grooms; five great-grandchildren Ivy Griffith; Raheem Fisher; Rumii Shaffer; Waylon Grooms and Patsy Grooms.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Pastor Terry Vaughan officiating. Burial will follow in the Monta Vista Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Grayson VFW Post 7726. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 PM until time for the funeral service at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
