Rupert Elmer Melton, 99, of Pipers Gap, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Commonwealth Senior Living.
Born in Carroll County on January 2, 1927, to Willie and Grace Melton, Rupert grew up with the values that would guide him throughout his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Guida Carico, and his beloved wife of 69 years, Nell Williams Melton.
Rupert and Nell were married on July 2, 1949, beginning a beautiful life together filled with devotion to one another, a deep love for their family, and a shared enjoyment of traveling to all 50 states. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and commitment. When Nell began her long battle with dementia, Rupert cared for her with unwavering devotion until her passing in 2018.
Rupert is survived by his children and their spouses, Kenneth Melton and Sandra of Galax, and Regina Clark and Jerry of Greensboro, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Tammy Cain of Auburn, Indiana, Charlie Hiser of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Sarah Harden of Beaufort, North Carolina; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. His family was a source of great pride and joy.
Rupert’s life of service began at just 17 years old, when he joined the United States Navy during World War II. He served aboard the USS Los Angeles as a third-class signalman, answering his country’s call at a young age. His patriotism remained important to him throughout his life, and he was an active and respected member of the local VFW.
Following his military service, Rupert built a long and distinguished career behind the wheel. He began by driving a city bus in Washington, D.C., and concluded his career with Sam B. Griggs, Inc.—a local Texaco distributor. His professionalism, dependability, and careful driving earned him a remarkable award for driving one million miles without an accident.
Rupert’s commitment to helping others extended beyond his work and military service. He was a founding member of the Pipers Gap Rescue Squad, established in the mid-1960s, and took great pride in seeing the organization grow from its humble beginnings into the valued community resource it is today.
For all his accomplishments, some of Rupert’s happiest moments were among life’s simplest pleasures. An avid fisherman throughout his life, he loved nothing more than spending time on a creekbank with friends. Those quiet hours, shared stories, and good company were among the things that brought him the greatest joy.
Rupert was a special man in the truest sense of the words. He had a quick wit, a ready smile, and a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten an ordinary day. He made people laugh, put others at ease, and offered kindness without fanfare. Rupert’s life was a gift to his family, his friends, and his community. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Mt. Pisgah Church of Christ, 716 Fries Road, on Sunday, November 8, 2026. The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m., with the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. The service will be followed by a military burial at Monta Vista Gardens.
