Roger Lee Hutchens age 82 of Galax, Virginia departed this life on November 4, 2022 in the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center in Independence, Virginia.
Roger was born on May 1, 1940 in Carroll County, Virginia to George Clyde and Ocie Beasley Hutchens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Janet H. Wilkins and brothers Damon, Leonard and Gale; sisters-in-law Fern W. Porterfield and Merle W. Sharp.
Roger retired from Radford Army Ammunition Plant in 2003 after working there for 37 1/2 years. His co-workers became cherished friends.
After retirement the highlight of his day was breakfast at Hardee's with friends. Roger loved his garden and shared with others. He enjoyed all the seasons and beauty of nature especially in the fall cutting firewood.
Roger was a member of Galax Church of God of Prophecy since 1974. He loved the Lord, his family, his church family and his many friends. He was a "people person" and never met a stranger.
He is survived by his wife and soul mate of almost 57 years Nina Sue Hutchens of Galax, Virginia; daughters Sarah Leigh Hutchens of Mt. Airy, North Carolina Elizabeth Anne Hutchens of Roanoke, Virginia; brother Larry Hutchens of Austinville, Virginia; three sisters—in-law Ercell W. Cowan of Greensboro, North Carolina; Shirley Hutchens of Hillsville, Virginia; Linda Hutchens of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; special family friend Lori Rathburn and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral service will be held Sunday at 12:00 PM in the Galax Church of God of Prophecy 1124 Tower Road, Galax, Virginia with Pastor Titus Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Monta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 10:00 AM until time for the funeral service at the Galax Church of God of Prophecy.
He will be greatly missed by his family and his beloved pets, Adele, Peanut and George.
