Robert Earl Shaffner, Jr. better known as Bud Shaffner age 81 of Fries, Virginia passed away Thursday, August 17, 2017 in the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center.

He was born in Grayson County, Virginia on November 24, 1935 to Robert Earl Shaffner, Sr. and Jeanetta Yates Shaffner.

He proudly served his country in the US Navy and then operated heavy equipment for several companies before becoming self-employed as an independent logger. After retirement, he enjoyed farming on Twin Pond Farm and spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his children Robert Earl Shaffner, III of Pulaski, Virginia; Michael C. and Rhonda Shaffner of Pinnacle, North Carolina; Kimberly D. Shaffner of Pulaski, Virginia; sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Keith Moxley of Galax, Virginia; uncles Coy Shaffner and Virgil Shaffner both of Fries, Virginia; a niece and several nephews; special friends Shelby Edgington and Nick Marquina of Independence, Virginia and faithful companion "Rocky".

A graveside service will be held Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Providence Cemetery with the Rev. Greg Carico officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Grayson VFW Post 7726. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fries Community Center, P.O. Box 604, Fries, Virginia 24330.
