Robert Swanson Kyle, Jr. of Galax, Va. passed away on July 17, 2026, peacefully at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center surrounded by his loving wife Charyl and his children. Robert was born in Big Stone Gap, Va. on February 28, 1936, to the late Dr. Robert Swanson Kyle, Sr. and Vera Hampton Kyle. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters Mary Anne Kyle Mackey and Jean Kyle Hedges. Robert is survived by his wife Charlotte (Charyl) Kyle of Galax, his children Rebecca Kyle Burgess and husband Brent of Cleveland, TN, Robert Swanson Kyle, III and wife Cynthia of Athens, TN, and Kimberly Kyle Mitchell and husband Bill of Knoxville, TN; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Tom Kyle and wife Margaret of Galax and by several nieces and nephews.
Robert spent four years in the United States Army, serving as a teletype operator. Following his discharge from the service, Robert obtained employment with the NASA Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. using his teletype experience. After his work with NASA, he returned to Galax, Va, where he became the owner of B & G Paint Store and a bus driver for Grayson County Schools.
Robert leaves behind a legacy his family will carry forward through his honesty, integrity, generosity, kindness, and unwavering work ethic. He was a loving and considerate husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially on summer vacations in Marco Island, FL. He loved gardening, fishing, raising chickens, traveling to the western states and frequenting his favorite restaurants.
We cherished the time we had with Robert and eagerly await a reunion when Jesus comes.
A graveside service will be held at the Captain Litrille Hampton Memorial Cemetery at 121 Beech Grove Lane, Galax, VA, at 10:00 am, on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, with Elder Randy Higgins of the Galax Seventh-Day Adventist Church officiating. Military graveside honors will be conducted by Grayson County VFW Post 7726. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Galax Seventh-Day Adventist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Family and friends are welcomed to attend.
