Obituary

On Friday, August 12, 2022, the Mandolin Man, Reid Robertson, peacefully left his earthly home, in Grayson County, to be reunited with his wife of 64 years.

Reid was born on March 18, 1928, in Grayson County. He was the youngest of seven children, born to Lemmie and Dora Robertson.

He married the love of his life, Lorene Nichols on March 23, 1946. The couple had two daughters. After 33 years he retired from the Fries Cotton Mill and continued farming until age 92. He loved his cattle, his dogs, traveling and hunting; but most of all, he loved his farm.

Although, he never read music, he was considered by many to be one of the most talented mandolin players of his time.  During his retirement he not only played this instrument but also handmade a mandolin for each of his daughters, along with each of his grandchildren. He could be heard every Saturday morning, playing his mandolin. His love of Old Time Music will live on in the hearts and memories of his family and friends.

This wonderful, strong, amazing man, will be remembered by his family as "the greatest man they ever knew."

He is survived by his daughters Linda Cochran; Chris Robertson and Greg Ayers, both of Elk Creek; five grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and special friends, Ronnie and Brenda Gravely and Orpha Holdway.

The funeral service will be held Monday at 2:00 PM in the Jerusalem United Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Jerusalem Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 12:00 PM until time for the service at the Jerusalem United Methodist Church. Flowers will be appreciated, or donations may be made to the Mt. Valley Hospice, 1477 Carrollton Pike, Hillsville, Virginia 24343.
