Nona Jean was born on December 18, 1934 to the late Dexter and Pearl Durnil. She was very involved in her church and community. She took great pride in being a member of the Gladeville Ruritan Club, Hillsville VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and the Moose Lodge of Galax. She was also involved with the senior group in Carroll County and Galax. She was a proud member of the Sassy Red Hatters. She had a love of helping others and being with her friends and family. Her love of helping others showed in her years of volunteering at Twin County Regional Hospital and in her weekly trips to nursing homes to visit and bring candy to patients. She had a love of nature and always had beautiful flowers, multiple hummingbirds, and seasonal birds that visited her feeders each spring and summer. She was an avid book lover and had a great love of reading. Her other hobbies and loves included crocheting, gardening, traveling, and the ocean.
She is survived by her husband Edward C. Alderman of Woodlawn; daughter Regina (David) Mabe of Woodlawn; son-in-law Brian Jones of Ivanhoe; two grand children, Christina Mabe of Wilmington, N.C. and Heather Mabe of Hillsville; three great-grand children Caitlynn Pritchard, Constantine, and Finnley Mabe; one niece Yvonne Alderman of Christiansburg, three nephews Sammy, Rodney, and Timmy Jennings of Galax. She is preceded in death by her parents Dexter and Pearl Durnil; sisters Ineda Jennings, Matokia Alderman, and Louise Durnil; and her beloved daughter Sabrina Alderman.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at Vaughn-Guynn Funeral Home in Galax, Va. at 2:00 p.m. There will be a dinner provided by her church at First Christian Church in Galax following her memorial service for family and friends.
