Mary Catherine (Mary K) Vaughan's Obituary
Mary Catherine (Vaughan) Vaughan, 89, of Fries, Va., passed into eternal life with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 20, 2018. She was born in Fries, on March 7, 1928, to Robert Lee and Dorothy Grubb Vaughan, the ninth of eleven children.
"Mary K." as she was fondly known, graduated from Fries High School in 1945 and Jefferson Nursing College, in Roanoke, Va., in 1947, as a Registered Nurse. Mrs. Vaughan served throughout the 1950s as a nurse both at the Radford, Va., Arsenal and at the Oak Ridge, Tn., Y-12 nuclear plant.
She loved her family, her friends, and her church, Fries First United Methodist, where she was a life-long member, a board member, a long-time soprano in the choir, and a soloist at many local weddings and funerals. She was also a one-time member of the Fries School Board.
She is preceded in death by her parents, five sisters, two brothers, and her husband of 55 years, Ralph Edward Vaughan (d. 2015).
Mrs. Vaughan is survived by her two sons: Michael Sandy Napier (and Martha), of Virginia Beach, Va., and Joel Darin Vaughan (and Kellie), of Colorado Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren (Michael Sandy II, John Meade and David Joel Napier, and Haley Ann and Zachary Edward Vaughan); seven great grandchildren (Libby, Samuel, Ian, Michael, Peter, Soleil and Elijah Napier); one sister (Mrs. Ruth Sage); two brothers (George "G. B." and Ralph D. "Boomy" Vaughan); many nieces and nephews; and more friends than anyone can count.
The funeral service will be held at the Fries First United Methodist Church, on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Lee Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Fries Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until time for the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are requested to be made to Fries First United Methodist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
The family expresses deep and sincere gratitude to all the extended family, friends, and neighbors who have helped Mary K. during the past several weeks and months, some even years. You were God's hands and feet in her life, and in our lives. We have never seen such love.
