Mary Ella "Steed" Brannon, 71 of Galax passed away at her home on Tuesday, August 8 following a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). She was born in Front Royal VA on November 29, 1934 to the late William F. & Mae H. Steed. Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Lowell G. Brannon, Jr., of the home; a son, William G. Brannon of Galax; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra B. & David W. Voroyka of Pulaski; two beloved granddaughters, Sarah A. Marshall and Morgan G. Marshall, both of Pulaski.
Mrs. Brannon was a graduate of Warren County (VA) High School and the University of Virginia School of Nursing where she was recently inducted into the Thomas Jefferson Society. During her career, she was a registered nurse holding licensures in the states of Washington and Virginia. She was employed as an RN at Roanoke Memorial Hospital(O.R.), Galax General Hospital, Waddell Hospital, and Twin County Regional Hospital where she served as staff RN, second supervisor and assistant OR supervisor. Additionally Mrs. Brannon will be remembered as a wonderful and caring wife, mother, grandmother, friend, colleague, kindergarten teacher, and Girl Scout leader. The family will receive friends Friday, August 11, 2006 from 1 PM until 2 PM at the First Baptist Church with the funeral to follow at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Gene Strickland officiating. Interment will follow in the Felts Cemetery.
