Marie Thomas Walker was a soft spoken, humble leader who contributed greatly to the community she loved. Originally from Front Royal, VA, she was a 1958 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia with a B.S. degree in Nursing.
She found a passion for teaching and truly loved the LPN students that she taught at Galax High School for eight years. She genuinely rejoiced in their successes.
In 1982, she joined the staff at Twin County Community Hospital as the Patient Education Coordinator. There she comforted and educated many patients to manage their medical needs. She was a Certified Diabetic Educator and started the first Diabetic Support Group in the Twin County area.
In addition, she served on the Galax School Board, and in 1984, was appointed by Galax City Council to serve out the term of her late husband, Herb Walker.
Another contribution to the community was her joyful service as a Girl Scout Troop leader for many years. Her guidance and leadership enriched the lives of many young girls in the area.
Her many friends have described her as a gentle, kind sweet lovely lady who will be greatly missed.
She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law: Catherine Marie Walker of Richmond, Virginia; Lyn Walker and Bradley E. Clark of Jacksonville, Florida; two grandchildren Rachel Elizabeth Clark and Banner Thomas Clark; one great granddaughter; brother and sister-in-law: Robert W. and Sally Thomas III of Crisfield, Maryland; sister-in-law Kay Chalmers of Mechanicsville, Virginia; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral Service will be held Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 2:00 PM in the First Baptist Church, Galax, Virginia. Burial will follow in the Felts Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:00 PM until service time.
