On Thursday, September 7th, Margaret Christine Matthews Thomason, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother great-grandmother and sister passed away at 87 years old.
Margaret was born in Galax, Virginia on December 8, 1935, as the youngest of seven children to the late Thomas Jefferson and Zelle Elizabeth Matthews.
She graduated from Galax High School in 1954 where she was very active in athletic activities. Margaret lettered in many sports including basketball, cheerleading squad, and swim team. Margaret went on to attend Appalachian State University where she was a member of the Flying Fish.
Her greatest joy in life was her family and she cared deeply for those around her. Margaret married her high school sweetheart, Bobby Ray Thomason, Sr., on December 9th 1956. Margaret is survived by her son; Bobby Ray Thomason, Jr. (Galax, Va) and his wife, Brenda Farmer Thomason, and son; Joshua Uriah Thomason (Jonesville, NC) and wife, Jessica Adams Thomason, oldest daughter; Malessa Thomason Edwards (Galax, Va) and children; Marcus Calvin Edwards (Mechanicsville, Va) and wife, Lauren Nobles Edwards, and Cristie Edwards Preston (Columbus, KS) and husband, Eric Daniel Preston, and their children; Aura Lucille, Brooks Parker, and Cora Lee Elizabeth Preston, youngest daughter; Bettye Jane Thomason Roberts (Galax, Va), sister-in-law, Freida Matthews (North Wilkesboro, NC) and family, brother-in-law J.D. Thomason (Galax, Va) and wife, Alice, and sister-in-law Betty Lou Reid (Galax, Va), and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
Margaret enjoyed spending time with her life-long camping friends;, Mary (Murt) Moore; Exey Siceloff and the late Joyce Hankley Bartlett.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, parents and siblings, brothers; Billy Matthews, Robert Matthews, Thomas Matthews, and John Matthews, and sisters; Elizabeth Ann Matthews and May Jane D'Armi.
The Family will receive friends on Monday, September 11th, 2023 from 2 to 3 o'clock at Vaughan Guynn Funeral Home. A public ceremony will be held following the viewing. A private family service will be held at the graveside.
