Obituary

Mary Margaret Booher Hensley, age 87, of Galax, VA, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023, in Chatham Nursing and Rehabilitation in Elkin, NC. She was born January 29, 1936, in Scott County, VA, to the late John Jackson Booher and Mary Clemence Cox Booher. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Freddie Lee Hensley, sisters Avanelle Worley and Evelyn Carter, and brothers Robert Burke Booher and Jack Milton Booher.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Michael Barbarian of Virginia Beach, VA, and her son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Debbie Hensley of Galax. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Savanna and Shannon Barbarian of Virginia Beach and Jordan Hensley of Galax. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Margaret was only 17 when she graduated from Virginia Intermont College; that same year, she married Fred on December 19, 1953. They moved to Galax in the early sixties when Fred was assigned here as a Virginia State Trooper, and it became their lifelong home. Margaret worked at  R L Persinger & Company for several years before being elected as the Galax City Treasurer, an office she held for 37 years. Margaret was a beloved member of Camp Zion Church.

Margaret was an avid golfer with an enduring love for the game. She began playing golf in the seventies at Galax Country Club, where she served as a Secretary and on the Board of Directors. In addition, she held various officer positions with the Galax Ladies Golf Association, planning numerous tournaments. She later joined the Blue Ridge Country Club and played almost every week of the Ladies Golf Season until her death. She also competed in the Blue Ridge Golf Association, playing against several clubs throughout Virginia.

Margaret worked to raise money for the American Cancer Society, which was near and dear to her heart. She worked diligently to organize golf tournaments for the Cancer Research Fund at Blue Ridge Country Club. In addition, she traveled to other parts of Virginia and North Carolina, helping raise funds for Cancer Research.

Margaret loved the game of golf and wanted to share that love with others. Her smile and gentle demeanor will be missed by her fellow golfers and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend whose presence will be cherished and greatly missed.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 AM in the Camp Zion Church with Pastor Cody Brown and Pastor Rodney Christman officiating. The burial will be in Boohers Chapel Cemetery at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from six until eight at the Camp Zion Church.

In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request donations be made to Camp Zion Church, Endless Possibilities Church or Boohers Chapel Cemetery.
