Lundus Harvey Neff, Jr.'s Obituary
Lundus Harvey Neff, Jr., age 86 of Galax, Virginia passed away Wednesday, February 15, 2012 in the Twin County Regional Hospital.
Mr. Neff was born in Pocahontas, Virginia on August 31, 1925 to the late Lundus Harvey Neff, Sr. and Lucile Hicks Neff.
A long time attorney in the Galax area, he is survived by his wife of 53 years Marguerite Vass Neff; one daughter and son-in-law Celia Neff Vaughan and Taylor Christian Vaughan; three granddaughters Emily Marguerite Vaughan, Rebecca Elizabeth Vaughan; and Carolyn Taylor Vaughan; one sister-in-law Mrs. Thomas R. Bass of Clayton, North Carolina; one brother-in-law Mr. Alexander B. Atkins of Cobb's Creek, Virginia; one niece Dr. Debra B. Harr of Charlotte, N.C.; four nephews Mr. Brad Atkins of Norfolk, Va. Rev. Dr. David M. Neff of Chicago, Il.; Mr. John R. Neff of Lutz, Fl.; and Mr. Patrick L. Neff of Gallup, New Mexico.
Mr. Neff grew up in Rural Retreat, Virginia and graduated from Rural Retreat High School. He served his country in the United States Merchant Marine and in the United States Army. He attended law school at the University of Richmond and passed the bar exam in 1949. He started his law practice in Fries, Virginia and later moved his practice to Galax.
He married Marguerite in December 1958. Mr. Neff served two terms as Grayson County's Commonwealth Attorney. He was a member of the bar association and a practicing attorney for over 55 years. Mr. Neff served on the Galax City School Board and was on the board of Wytheville Community College for many years. An active Republican, he was also a member of the Galax Moose Lodge and a long time member of the Galax Masonic Lodge.
The family will receive friends and visitors at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home from 5 pm until 7 pm on Friday, February 17th. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, February 18th at the First United Methodist Church of Galax with Rev. Richard Gregory and Rev. Dr. David M. Neff officiating. The body will lie-in-state one hour prior the funeral service at the church.
Burial will follow at the Mt.View Cemetery in Rural Retreat, Virginia at 1:30 PM.
