Obituary

LTC Frank R. Plichta, beloved husband, daddy, and papa, passed away Wednesday, August 30, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Mary T. Plichta.  He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sharon Higgins Plichta of the home; daughter and son in law, Jill and Billy Griggs of Butner, NC; grandson, Grayson Jones of Wake Forest, NC; brother and sister-in-law, John and Linda Plichta and their children Jonathan and Sarah; sister and brother-in-law, Mary Ann and Michael Brown; brother, George Plichta, 3 step-granddaughters and 4 step great-grandchildren.

Frank was passionate about serving his country, his community, and his family.  He retired from the army and army reserve after 22 years of service.  He met his wife, Sharon, while they were both stationed in Germany and, shortly after they married, they served in the Vietnam War together.  Sharon as a nurse and Frank as a Signal Corps officer.

Since retiring in Galax, Frank has been active in the local VFW, American Legion, and the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts.  Frank was instrumental in the development of the Veterans Memorial at the Galax Library.  He leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and sweet memories for his family and friends.

The funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church in Galax on Sunday, September 3rd  at 4:00 pm with Dr. Kevin Rosenfeld and Pastor Sam Bartlett officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vale Cemetery with Military Honors by the Grayson VFW Post 7726.  The family will receive friends Sunday from 3:00 PM until time for the funeral service at the First Baptist Church.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts.
