Lois R. Cox, wife of the late George H. Cox, of Hebron Road, Galax, joined him in Heaven Saturday morning September 7, 2013. The daughter of Louie C. and Stella Mae Roberts of Hebron Road, Lois was born in Carroll County May 21, 1928. She was the only daughter of four children, which included brothers, Jack, Rex and William Roberts.
Lois was employed, throughout her working career, as a seamstress at local Galax and Hillsville textile garment companies after graduating from Woodlawn High School.
Following his return from the World War II European Theatre, she married the late George H. Cox, also of Galax. They established their first residence in Galax and later moved to their Hebron Road address where they enjoyed 53 years of married life. A son was born to the couple in 1947.
Lois was active in River Hill Christian Church and in later years, Great Hope Baptist Church. She loved the church community and often participated in various church activities. However, her real love was her volunteer work at Twin Country Regional Hospital where she was an active volunteer for approximately 13 years. She could be found at the reception desk most every weekend and often during the week. Lois so enjoyed helping people, as well as the opportunity to keep current on local happenings. She was also a volunteer for Hospice of Galax.
In 2012, reluctantly, she agreed to leave her home and prized flower garden and moved to Virginia Beach to be closer to her family. She resided at First Colonial Inn, a residential community where she immediately enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. Later she moved into Kings Grant House when a little extra support was required. Again, she immediately fit into the community and quickly developed new friendships.
In addition to many close and valued friends in Galax, she is survived by her son, George H. Cox, Jr. and his wife Helen Terry Cox, their daughter and her granddaughter Rachel Nicole Cox, and her son and Lois's great grandson, Joseph Miller Cole. She so enjoyed Joseph and without a doubt, he was the highlight of her day during his visits.
