Obituary

Len V. Lyons age 85 of Fries, Va. passed away on Tuesday, January 9, 2007 in Twin County Regional Hospital. He was born on May 28, 1921 to the late Montie Azariah & Minnie Florence Thomas Lyons. Len was preceded in death by his twin brother Rev. Ben Lyons and also brothers Roy P. "Pat" Lyons, Raymond O. Lyons, Dale C. Lyons and William C. "Cody" Lyons and four sisters, Annie L. Hill, Clara N. Halsey, Mable O. Lyons and Lois L. Shelton. Len was a proud veteran of World War II having enlisted in the military on the first year anniversary of Pearl Harbor. He served in the Air Corps and also the 78th Infantry Division under General George Patton. His domestic service included a stint at Tinker Field Air Base in Oklahoma, and while in Nebraska, he trained canines for military guard duty. Later in Europe Len traveled across Germany to Berlin, helping to set up military governments in towns recently taken by the Allied Forces. Len retired in 1983 from Dan River Textile Company in Danville, Va. with over thirty years of service, afterward moving back home to the mountains of southwest Virginia. He is survived by his sister Kathleen Hester of Fries, Va.; sister & brother-in-law Norma & Merle Cornett of Comers Rock, Va. and his sister-in-law Aleen Lyons of Fries, Va.. Many nieces & nephews were proud to call him "Uncle Len". The funeral service and celebration of Len's life will be held Friday, January 12th at 2:00 PM at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church in Fries, Va. with Rev. Millard Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from seven until nine at Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church.
