Laurence Lee Wensel age 94 of Galax, Virginia passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2014 in the Twin County Regional Hospital.
Mr. Wensel was born in Garrett County, Maryland on March 15, 1919 to Floyd Lee and Bertha Mae Nicholson Wensel. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers Ralph and Walter Wensel.
Mr. Wensel proudly served his country in the US Army Air Corp and was a World War II Veteran. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church where he had served as Chairman of the Administrative Board. He was past president of the Galax Lions Club and also retired from Carnation Milk Company as a field man.
He is survived by his wife Janice Cox Wensel of Galax, Virginia; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and John Phillips of Wytheville, Virginia; Dianne and Ed Stone of Christiansburg, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law Lee and Vicky Wensel of Christiansburg, Virginia; six grandchildren Meghan Govin; Allison Phillips; Michael Wagoner; Travis Wagoner; Lauren Scaletta and Seth Wensel; two great-grandchildren; sisters Mildred Dunbar of Oakland, Maryland; Dot Wilt of Coshocton, Ohio; Gladys Faherty of Frostburg, Maryland; brothers Floyd Lee Wensel of Triadelphia, West Virginia; Donald Eugene Wensel of Silver Springs, Maryland; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Gregory officiating. Burial will follow in the Coal Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:00 PM until time for the funeral service at the First United Methodist Church. The family request no flowers please. Donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the charity of the donor's choice.
