Crockett, Joseph Pierce, age 88, of Galax, died on November 8, 2008.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Helen Spraker Crockett. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Jerry Wolford of Glen Allen, Virginia; grandsons John Wolford of Glen Allen and Jack Wolford and wife Berkeley Rowe Wolford of Mechanicsville, Virginia; great grandson Grant Thomas Wolford; brother Buford and wife Christine Kegley Crockett; brother-in-law and wife David and Rexene Spraker, all of Galax; several nieces and nephews.

The three sons of John Dyer and Ada Baker Crockett served their country with honor during World War II. Samuel Baker Crockett served in the US Army, Joseph Pierce Crockett in the US Navy, and Buford Bailey Crockett in the US Marine Corp. Joe was manager of Radio Station WBOB and was with the station for 38 years. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church. He was a devoted member of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department and served as chief of the Fire Department for 32 years. Joe loved Galax and its people. He was very civic minded with special passion for the Fire Department and the Galax Community Christmas Party. He was awarded the Lions Club Community Service Award, the Citizen of the Year Moose Award, named Boss of the Year for the Galax Jaycees, and given the Community Service Award by the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Family will receive friends Monday, November 10 at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 pm with a graveside service on Tuesday, November 11 at 11:00 am at Felts Cemetery,Galax. Officiating ministers are the Rev. Walt Simmerman and Dr. Tom Whartenby. Memorial contributions may be made to the Galax Volunteer Fire Department PO Box 147 Galax VA 24333.
