Johnny Preston Smith, 65 of Morristown, Tennessee passed to his heavenly home on Monday, May 5, 2014. While home in Virginia, he was always called Johnny by his family; however, in Tennessee he was called John, J.P. or known as "Big John", not for his stature but for his character. John retired after 47 years from banking in 2011. His passion was farming, hay and beef cattle. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Morristown where he ushered for 43 years. John was a member of the Morristown Lodge #231. John was proud to have served his country as a United States Marine; he loved his country as much as he loved his beloved Corp..
He was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Irene Crawford Smith; his grandfather, Elder Preston P. Crawford; his father-in-law, Ardath "Bill" Sumner, and his brothers-in-law Larry Bryant and John Todd.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 46 years, Jeanette "Nette" Sumner Smith; sons and daughter-in-law Preston Smith; Philip and Angela Smith of Morristown, Tennessee; his brother and sister-in-law C.S. and Jeanie Smith; mother-in-law, Doris Sumner, sister-in-law, Freida Sumner Bryant. He was blessed to have many friends that became his extended family.
Funeral service will be conducted in Morristown, Tennessee on Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the First Christian Church of Morristown.
Visitation for family and friends will be 6:00-8:00 PM Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, Galax, Virginia. A graveside service and burial will be at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Crooked Creek Cemetery, Woodlawn, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the First Christian Church of Morristown.
