Obituary

John Walker Stanley, Jr. (Jack), 85, of Roanoke, formerly of Galax, VA passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife of 17 years, Susan Fichtenger McKaskel Stanley by his side on Wednesday, December 26, 2012. His parents John Walker Stanley, Sr., and Sarah Hillard Stanley, his sisters Lucille Bowie, Susanne Wampler, his brother Larimer and his 2nd wife Betty precede him in death.

Jack graduated from Augusta Military Academy in 1945 where he was President of the student body and First Captain. He then served in the US Army of Occupation in Austria at the end of WW II. He then attended William and Mary College. In 1948 Jack returned to Galax, VA where he started his 45-year career in the family's trucking company, Blue Ridge Transfer. He learned the business from the bottom up loading the trucks, dispatching, routing, driving and eventually working his way up to V. P. of the company. In 1961 Jack along with his brother Larry moved the headquarters to Roanoke, VA where he became Executive Vice President. In 1968 he assumed the duties as President and CEO until the company was sold in 1993. Jack was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church of Roanoke, VA. He served on several boards and was a member of various community service organizations. Jack followed the Christian faith and supported many worthwhile charities, such as Meals on Wheels and ministering to prisoners of the local jail.

Jack loved his second home at Smith Mt. Lake where he took his many friends and family for daylong boat rides on his boat the "SCaper". When not on the water he was an avid golfer and loved to snow ski with his children. Jack, along with his wife Sue, cherished their time together and loved traveling both abroad and in the U.S.

Jack will be greatly missed and his memory cherished by his many family and friends. In Roanoke, he is survived by his daughters Lee Stanley, Harriet (Hallie) Stanley and companion Stewart Feather, son John and wife Lisa Stanley. Dado to 5 beautiful granddaughters, Laura, Sarah, and Patricia Jessee; Olivia and Shelby Stanley. Stepchildren include Laura McKaskel and husband David Arnold, Jerry McKaskel, Jr., Ron and wife Jennifer McKaskel. Papa Jack to two grandsons Casey and Cooper McKaskel. Survived also are in-laws Mary Stuart Stanley, Mary Betty and Connie Sellers, and Ann Stephenson along with many nieces and nephews. A special thanks goes to Jack's wonderful caretaker, Ron Crowder. A very special shout out goes to Ashley, the rescue cockapoo, who brought joy to both Jack and Sue's lives.

Interment will be at the Stanley family plot at Felts Cemetery, Galax, VA, Friday, December 28, 2012 at 1pm. Arrangements to be made by Oakey's Funeral Home, 318 Church Ave. SW Roanoke,, and Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home, 201 West Center Street, Galax, VA A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 29th, 11 am at the Second Presbyterian church with Pastor Gerald Carter officiating. The family will hold a reception immediately following the service in the reception hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Second Presbyterian Church, 214 Mountain Ave., Roanoke, VA 24016 or to the Good Samaritan Hospice, 2408 Electric Road, Roanoke, VA 24018.
