John H. Leonard, formerly of Pipers Gap, Va. was called to his Heavenly Home, Sunday,
April 22, 2012. Mr. Leonard was born January 30, 1926 in Carroll County, Va. to
Conner and Rhoda Surratt Leonard. He is preceded in death by his wife of 55 years,
Laura Mae Burcham Leonard, along with an infant son. He is also preceded in death by
his parents; sister, Aline L Goodson; Irene L Burcham; brothers, Olin Leonard and Luke
Leonard. Mr. Leonard is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dwain and Judy
Leonard of Roanoke, Va. and a daughter and son-in-law Judy and Ron Lundy of
Roanoke,Va. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Alan and wife Kim Leonard,
Salem, Va.; Rhonda and husband David Shay of Lewisburg, WV; Stephanie and husband
Phil Benne of Salem, Va.; Scott and wife Nicole Lundy of Roanoke, VA. He is survived
by 10 great grandchildren; Johnathan Miller, Laura Leonard, Jack Leonard, Drew Benne,
Gabriel Shay, Alex Benne, Mary-Grace Shay, Max Benne, Charlie Lundy, and Toryn
Leonard. Also surviving are nieces and nephews. John also leaves behind his loving
family at The Villages at Pheasant Ridge, Roanoke, Va., his home for the past three
years.
Mr. Leonard loved his country and proudly served in the US Navy during World War II.
When he returned to Galax he began a 50 year career at the Vaughan-Bassett and
Vaughan furniture factories in Galax, as well as farming to provide for his family.
He was an active member of Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church where he served as
Deacon and Sunday School Superintendent. John's faith in God was an inspiration to all
who met and knew him. He was also active in his community and served for many years
on the Carroll County Public Service Authority Board.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Pheasant Ridge and his caregivers,
Barbara Flinchum, Lori Meeks, Darlene Hill, Donna Boothe, Linda Nester and Good
Samaritan Hospice.
Funeral services will be held at Blue Ridge Chapel Baptist Church, Galax, Va. Thursday,
April 26, 2012. The family will receive friends from 12 noon - 2 PM followed by the
service. Burial will follow in the Blue Ridge Chapel Cemetery.
