Retired Sergeant Major John Bradley McMickle (Brad) age 53 of Fries, Virginia passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 at his home.
Brad was born on October 11, 1963 in Neubruecke, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany to John Thomas and Linda Brown McMickle.
Brad proudly served his country in the US Army, entering on September 1, 1982 and retiring on October 31, 2002 having served 20 years and 2 months. He was the recipient of many awards and ribbons but was a true soldier and did not boast or talk very much about his experiences and achievements. All he really wanted was the respect he
and all our soldiers truly deserve and to be remembered as the "Great American" he was.
He is survived by his wife Jennifer Underwood McMickle of Fries, Virginia; children Amber McMickle Rodgers of Wichita, Kansas; Katy Sapp and special friend Justin Leonard; Eli Sapp and fiance' Alix Lundy and Caraline Felts; sisters and brothers-in-law Becky and Dave Williams of Fries, Virginia; Diane and Mike Edwards of Independence, Virginia; three grandchildren Connor McMickle; Gavin Rodgers and Charlie Rodgers; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; father-in-law and mother-in-law Jim and Dreama Underwood of Fries, Virginia; brothers-in-law and spouses Jimmie and Tracy Underwood of Fries, Virginia; Josh and Nikki Underwood of Woodlawn, Virginia.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 2:00 PM in the Liberty Hill United Methodist Church with the Rev. Sam Holder and the Rev. Lee Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in the Liberty Hill Cemetery with Military Honors by the US Army Honor Guard. The family will receive friends Saturday from twelve noon until 2:00 PM at the Liberty Hill United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers the family ask for donations in Brad's memory be made to the Fries Fire Department and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 9 Fries, Virginia 24330.
