Joel Landon “J.L” Hill passed peacefully on May 30th, 2026, shortly after 1am at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax, VA. He is survived by his loving wife, Delena Surratt Hill, his daughter Gale Hill Caudill, and his son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Sheri Hill. He is also survived by three grandchildren and spouses: Travis and Kimberly Caudill Weddle, Morgan Hill, Landon and Sandie Hill, and by his great grandson, Tucker Hill.

Joel was the son of Troy E. and Mallie Coe Hill, who both preceded him in death, as well as his sisters Mary Carico and Frances Robertson, brother Paul Hill, and son-in-law Randy Caudill.

He was a devout husband, father, son, grandfather, and friend. Joel was born on March 29, 1936, in Galax, VA. Joel, or as some of his friends called him “J.L”, grew up in Galax, VA and graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1953. He later graduated from National Business College, Roanoke, VA.

Joel and Delena celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on September 8, 2025.

He worked for the USDA in Hillsville, VA until he retired in October 1994 after previously working at Twin County Motor Co, Burlington Industries, and Persingers, all located in Galax, VA.

He was one of the original members of Gay Hills Country Club, which is now Blue Ridge Country Club, where he enjoyed playing golf and enjoyed “Senior Day Care” mornings drinking coffee and playing cards. Over the years, Joel was a member of the Galax Moose Lodge and the Galax Y’s Men Club.

Joel loved life and helping others. He enjoyed teasing and joking with his nieces and nephews, along with his own family. He listened and always had words of wisdom. He will be greatly missed but we know that God has completely healed him.
