Joanne Davis Bloomwell, age 86, passed away at WindsorMeade of Williamsburg, Virginia on January 6, 2019, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. She is preceded in death by her parents Blace Edward Davis and Alma Lee (Combs) Davis and her sister Judy Haynes of Galax, Virginia. A lifelong Christian, devoted wife, mom, and "Gramie," she is survived by her husband of 58 years Arthur Eugene "Gene" Bloomwell, son Arthur Bloomwell (Kevin), daughter Julie Kassis (Chris), and grandchildren Sarah Bureau (Nick), Michael Kassis, and Charlie Kassis. Also left to cherish her memory are her sisters and brothers Richard Davis (Bertie), Blenda Garland, Helen Summers, Eddie Davis (Hazel), Janie Goodson (Jimmy), Nancy Wiseman (Jerry), Gary Davis (Cheryl), and many nieces and nephews.
Joanne graduated from Galax High School and National Business College in Roanoke, Virginia. She began her career working for a state senator and in 1957 was an executive secretary in the offices at Colonial Williamsburg. Joanne was introduced to her future husband, Gene, who was then a young Lieutenant in the Navy and they were married in 1960. Joanne spent the next years making a happy home for her family as they settled in New Jersey, and worked as a Trust Officer at United National Bank in Plainfield, New Jersey. She was a lifelong follower of Jesus Christ and active in Pilgrim Covenant Church in South Plainfield, New Jersey. She served for 30 years as a volunteer and training director on the telephone crisis hotline, Caring Contact. Joanne and Gene traveled the world, visiting over 40 countries, before moving to the retirement community of WindsorMead, Williamsburg in 2010, where Joanne was provided with skilled and loving nursing care in her final years.
The family will receive friends at Camp Zion Church, 100 Camp Zion Road, Galax, Virginia Saturday, January 12, 2019 from 2:00 PM until the start of the funeral service at 3:00 PM. Burial will follow in the Camp Zion cemetery.
