Janice Cox Wensel age 91 of Galax, Virginia passed away Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Commonwealth Assisted Living in Radford, Virginia.
Mrs. Wensel was born on May 1, 1926 in Carroll County, Virginia to Roy Thomas and Pauline Blair Higgins Cox. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Laurence Lee Wensel and sister Jean Lineberry.
She was a 1949 graduate of Radford College. She was the Extension Agent for Grayson County for three years and then taught retiring from Woodlawn School in 1984. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Galax Lions Club and of the D.A.R. She was a longtime member of the Galax United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Linda and John Phillips of Wytheville, Virginia; Dianne and Ed Stone of Galax, Virginia; son and daughter-in-law Lee and Vicky Wensel of Christiansburg, Virginia; six grandchildren Meghan Govin, Allison Graham, Michael Wagoner, Travis Wagoner, Lauren Scaletta and Seth Wensel; five great grandchildren; sisters Betty Grogan of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Virginia Marion of Boynton Beach, Florida; Tommie Eddins of Roanoke, Virginia; Nancy Kemp of Port St Lucie, Florida; several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 2:00 PM in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev Richard Gregory officiating. Burial will follow in the Coal Creek Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1:00 PM until time for the funeral service at the First United Methodist church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 445, Galax, Virginia 24333 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
