It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of James Oliver Johnson, age 64 who departed from this world on Monday, January 26th, 2026, in Galax, Virginia. While our hearts are heavy with grief, we find solace in honoring his life, a pillar of strength, The Unsung Hero.
His gentle spirit and genuine kindness brighten the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. He believed in the power of a helping hand. His unconditional love, guidance and unwavering presence will be missed and forever cherished. His actions were constantly guided by empathy and integrity.
Born March 23, 1961, in the mountains of West Virginia, throughout his life James Oliver Johnson worked hard, sacrificed sleep, comfort and time for himself, twenty plus years as a truck driver and then he switched to Blue-Collar Life. He made an impact, earning the respect and admiration of his colleagues. His dedication, perseverance and unwavering work ethic should be an inspiration to us all. He taught by example, the strongest are the gentlest.
He is survived by his children James Denvar of Baltimore, Maryland; Alisha Geen of Galax, Virginia; seven grandchildren Kenyon, Alexzander, Dominic and Evalee Brown; Jerrell, Spencer and Elaini Green all of Galax, Virginia; mother Betty Blankenship of Woodlawn, Virginia; brothers Garland Johnson of Woodlawn, Virginia; Charley Johnson (Phillis) of West Virginia; Jesse Blankenship of Galax, Virginia; sister Betty Hegeman (Herman Kennedy); several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 2:00 PM in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Pastor Cheyenne Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Felts Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 PM until time for the funeral service at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
