Obituary

James "JimE" Ellington passed away peacefully in his cabin on Monday, February 9, 2026. Known locally as the "California Hippy" or "Cat Daddy," Jim was a colorful and unforgettable character. Born and raised in Northern California, he moved to Galax in 2016 after surviving significant health challenges, determined to start fresh and live life on his own terms.

Jim enjoyed reading science-fiction, discussing conspiracy theories, and riling up the locals with his "liberal Buddhist" ideas. He was rarely seen without a cup of coffee and cigarette hand. A kind and generous soul, he adored his feral cat, Jerry, and never missed a chance to brag about his nieces, nephews, and his son-in-law, Johnny Vegas, to anyone willing to listen.

One of Jim's lifelong dreams was to build his own cabin, and in Galax he made that dream a reality—though, not very successfully. Fortunately, he also helped guide his grandson John in building a cabin, where Jim happily spent his final years.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Tina Ellington; his youngest sister, Gayle Megazzi; a neice and nephew; and his adoptive parents, Arlene and Duke Ellington.

He is survived by his daughter, Tatiana; his son-in-law, Johnny Vegas; grandsons John and Jameson; and granddaughter Juliana, all of Galax, Virginia. He is also survived by his mother, Marian Anderson; brothers Will Clinton, David Runyon, Jim Clinton, and Ralph Brown; sisters Sherry Brown, Noelle Quinlivan, and Heidi McGrath; five brothers- and sisters-in-law; dozens of beloved nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and favorite cousins Charlie Howe, Julie Howe, and Bob Tadlock.

A loud and rowdy memorial barbecue to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.
