Obituary

Gunnery Sgt Hurley Lee Cain, 82, passed from this life on September 20, 2018 at Twelve Oaks Assisted Living in Mt. Airy, N.C. He is remembered for his military service to country, his pride in his two children, his love of his heritage, Virginia relatives and Galax roots.
He was born October 19, 1935 in Galax, VA to Casper and Nora Roberts Cain. He attended Glendale school before joining the United States Marine Corps in 1954.  He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, CA; Iwakuni, Japan; Twenty Nine Palms, CA; Hawthorne, Nevada.
He served two tours of duty in Vietnam one in 1966 and one in 1969. Mr. Cain was a decorated veteran and recipient of numerous awards including the Meritorious Unit Commendation award, Combat Action Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, 7 time Good Conduct Medal, Rifle and Pistol Sharpshooter Badges, two time Meritorious Mast Award.
In 1973, Mr. Cain received the National W.P.T. Hill Award before retiring from military service in 1974.
He was married to Naoko Seki "Micki" Cain who survives. They have 2 children Elina Lea Cain of greater Seattle, WA; & John Oneal Cain of Florida. He was also married to Barbara Towles Cain who is deceased. No children were born to this union.
He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 half brothers Eldridge Cain, Eugene Lawson.
He is survived by his children Elina and John. Two grandchildren, Jordan Sorrick of Columbia, MO; Lea Morgan of Joplin, MO. One great grandson Vincent Jonah Morgan of Joplin MO. One brother Casper "Oneal" Cain of Hillsville, 3 nephews Larry Cain of Hillsville, James Bird of Spokane, WA, Ellis Eugene Lawson of Fries; one niece Kathy Reed of Buena Park, CA  as well as a host of loving, devoted extended cousins, nieces and great nephew.
A  memorial service  will be held Sunday, October 28, 2018 at 3:00 PM in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Pastor Sam Bartlett delivering eulogy and Tina Burcham Robinson and Alicia Lambert speaking. Special music by Debbie Sutherland Creed.  Graveside military salute & honors performed by Grayson VFW 7726 will follow in the Galax City Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until time for the memorial service at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home.
