Hilda Frances
Fielder
November 1, 1926 – February 19, 2025
With sorrowful yet grateful hearts, we announce the passing of Hilda Mitchell Fielder, a beloved soul who touched many lives. At the age of 98, she peacefully transitioned to her Heavenly home on February 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and cherished memories.
Born on November 1, 1926, to Edgar Jackson Mitchell and Guida Higgins Mitchell, Hilda grew up in the close-knit Coal Creek community of Galax, Virginia, alongside her cherished siblings, William (Billy) Mitchell and Doris Mitchell Davis. From an early age, she embodied the values of faith, family, and hard work—principles that would guide her throughout her life.
Hilda attended Bluefield College, where she excelled in the secretarial program, completing her studies ahead of schedule. After college, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, where she worked for the Railroad Retirement Board. Though she valued the experiences and opportunities her time there provided, her heart always belonged to Coal Creek. She later returned home and began working as Secretary to the Superintendent at Burlington Mills, where she met the love of her life, Robert 'Bob' Fielder. The two built a life filled with unwavering devotion, faith, and love. She later continued her career at Sears, where she remained until her retirement.
Coal Creek was more than just a place; it was Hilda's homeplace, the heart of her world, and where she spent her life surrounded by family, faith, and the memories she cherished most. It was where she spent her childhood, built a life with her family, and created a lifetime of memories. For nearly a century, it remained the heart of her world, a place filled with love, laughter, and the warmth of home. Hilda and Bob worked side by side to create a beautiful life together, pouring their hearts into their home and family. Every corner of their home reflected the warmth, care, and effort she put into it, making it a place where love was felt and memories were made for generations to come.
Hilda was also a lifelong member of Glenwood United Methodist Church, a cherished place of worship deeply rooted in her beloved Coal Creek community. Her faith was the foundation of her life, an unwavering source of strength and comfort. It carried her through life's trials and losses, sustaining her with the assurance of God's grace. Just as she poured love into her home and family, she poured devotion into her faith, leaving behind a legacy of steadfast belief and spiritual guidance for those who knew and loved her.
Hilda was a devoted and faithful caregiver, dedicating many of her years to lovingly tending to the husband she adored and the parents she cherished with all her heart. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 48 years, Robert "Bob" Fielder, as well as her grandparents, parents, and brother.
A woman of unwavering strength and kindness, Hilda devoted her life to her family. Her appreciation for a life well-lived was grounded in the values she instilled in them—the importance of hard work, perseverance, and, above all, unconditional love. She led by example, showing that true wealth was found not just in what was built, but in the love and memories shared. Her patience was a gift she gave freely, offering wisdom when needed and unwavering support to those she cherished.
She never met a stranger, always greeting everyone she encountered with kindness and a warm smile. Loved by all who knew her, she had a way of making everyone feel special and welcome.
She is survived by the daughters she cherished, Denise F. Willis (Gary), Cheryl M. Fielder; her adored grandchildren, Brittany (Christopher) King and Brett Willis; and her beloved great-grandson, Braden Kane, who brought her endless joy; sister Doris Davis of Low Gap, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews..
Hilda lived a full and meaningful life, built on love for her family and the place she called home for nearly a century. Her legacy lives on through her daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandson, who will carry forward the lessons she so deeply believed in—compassion, unconditional love, respect, and the value of work ethic. She was the heart of her family, and her love will forever be felt in the lives she touched.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 PM in the Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Pastor Gleasanna DIxon; Brittany King and Dr. David R. Shockley officiating. Burial will follow in the Coal Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:00 PM until time for the funeral service at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105-3678.
