Hendrika Lie Marinus age 84 of Fries, Virginia passed away Friday, August 17, 2012 in the Twin County Regional Hospital.

Mrs. Marinus was born on December 24, 1927 in the Netherlands to Arie and Maartje Bowman Ruitenberg. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Dr. Jan Willem Marinus.

Hendrika "Lie" was raised in Holland and had many fond memories of the tulips in the spring, the many water canals, and ice skating to school in the winter. Her mother and her father supported the family by running a local bakery. During World War II, she and her family went through much adversity due the shortage of basic life essentials. She graduated from high school and later obtained a degree in culinary arts. In October 1952, she married Johannas (Jan) Marinus. She helped put him through medical school working several jobs. In 1955, Mrs. Marinus, her husband, and infant son, Jan Willem, arrived in Sewickley, Pennsylvania where Dr.Jan Marinus began his medical career. In 1957, the family welcomed a daughter, Margie Lucia. A year later, the family moved to Staunton, Virginia. In 1959, the Marinus' moved to Fries, Virginia where Dr. Marinus served his community as a physician until his retirement. In 1960, a son, Harold Douglas Arie, was born.

Mrs. Marinus was a devoted loving mother and homemaker. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, decorating, gardening, and serving the Fries community. Some of her fondest memories were visiting local schools and teaching youngsters about Holland and the hardships that World War II created. She was an active member of the First Christian Church in Galax, Virginia and the Fries Women's Club. She loved visiting her homeland and relatives of Holland but cherished being a citizen of the United States, obtaining her citizenship in 1974. Mrs. Marinus enjoyed decorating the town of Fries and numerous local churches for the Fourth of July and Christmas.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Margie L. and Dr. John Bamonte of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania; sons and daughters-in-law Harold Douglas A. and Donna R. Marinus of North Tazewell, Virginia; Jan Willem F. and Beth Marinus of Fries, Vrginia; sister Tine Barendregt of the Netherlands; eleven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Sunday, August 19, 2012 at 2:30 PM in the First Christian Church with Rev. Randy Morris officiating. Burial will follow in the Fries Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 PM until time for the funeral service at the church.The family request memorial donations be given to the First Christian Church of Galax, Virignia.
