Obituary

Helen Virginia Sutherland Leonard age 95 of Galax, Va. passed away Friday, May 22, 2009 at Waddell Nursing Home.

She was born on August 15, 1913 in Carroll County, Va. to Munsey Monroe and Ella Mae Hawkins Sutherland.

She was a faithful member of Locust Grove Church of Christ where she had been the pianist for thirty-four years.

She led a full and busy life raising her children in a Christian Home.

Helen and husband, Witten traveled thousands of miles across the U.S and enjoyed many years of traveling the world together often with family and friends.

A favorite thing to do with Witten while health permitted was to spend Sunday afternoons visiting the sick, shut-ins, relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son Julian Carroll Leonard and her husband Claude Witten Leonard, who passed away on February 29, 2008. Helen and Witten were married for seventy-three years.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Betty and Ralph Farmer of Salem, Va.; Wilma and Jimmy Poe of Galax, Va.; sons and daughter-in-law Phillip Leonard of Lynchburg, Va.; Warren and Bonnie Leonard of Galax, Va.; sister Thelma Carico of King, N.C.; sisters-in-law Edith Sutherland of Galax, Va.; Beulah Morgan of Elizabeth City, N.C.; brothers-in-law and spouses Eugene and Nancy Leonard of West Hyattsville, Maryland; Thurman and Pauline Leonard of Galax, Va.; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held at Locust Grove Church of Christ on Sunday, May 24, 2009 conducted by Guy Russell and Jim Gibbons with visitation starting at 2:00 pm and the service to follow at 3:00 pm. Burial will follow in Monta Vista Cemetery. Helen's grandsons will be pallbearers.
