Obituary

Harold "Mac" McGraw, age 91 of Galax, Virginia died October 11, 2013.

Mr. McGraw, the third of four sons, was born November 25, 1921 in Carthage, NY. He graduated with a BA in Math from Oklahoma University. He also completed undergraduate work at Western Michigan College, American University, Washington, D.C. and University of Maryland in Physics, Mathematics and Aeronautical Engineering.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1954. After completing Naval ROTC, duty assignments included Navy flight training, commander of a destroyer in the South Pacific, Desk Officer, Assistant Gunnery Officer, and Torpedo Officer. He received an honorable discharge from USNR in 1954. His civilian career included managing corporate sales of aerospace technology missile and electronic systems to the U.S. defense agencies. He served as Vice President of Mutual of Omaha in Washington, D.C., before his retirement in 1986.

He and wife Betty moved to Galax, VA in 1987 to live near daughter Debbie and three grandchildren. Mac was a member and elder of the Galax Presbyterian Church for many years. Mac was also an avid golfer and held various offices including as President of the former Galax Country Club and Rotary. His volunteer efforts in the community included Hospice Foundation, Red Cross blood mobile, and working tirelessly to raise funds for building the Galax Library. He was also an active Democrat supporter who helped facilitate local voting operations and networked with local democratic constituents.

Survivors include his wife Betty, children Michael McGraw, Bonnie Reeves, Carroll Wilson, and Tom McGraw; Donna Crowley, Debbie Lineberry and Dana McGee; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM Monday, October 14, 2013 at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 14, 2013 in the
Vaughan-Guynn Chapel with Dr. Tom Whartenby officiating. Interment will follow in the Felts Cemetery, Galax, Virginia with military rites conducted by Grayson VFW Post 7726.
