Glennis Stanley Morris passed away peacefully February 5, 2024, in the Waddell Nursing and Rehab Center.
She was born to the late James Estel and Mary Etta Largen Stanley September 5, 1924, in Lynch, Kentucky. They later moved to Laurel Fork, VA where Glennis and her siblings grew up on the family farm.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands Thelbert Randolph Ashlock & Marvin "Mark" Morris, her brothers and spouses Hassell and Evelyn Stanley; Leland and Theral Stanley; James Stanley; sisters and spouses Ardith and Forrest Nuckles; Iva and Glenn Wagner; Vida and Gladys Stanley.
Glennis led an active life beginning with her move to Washington, D.C. when she was only 18 years old. She worked for National Savings & Trust Company in the corporate trust department and later for Capital Airlines in Arlington, VA. While employed there, she was also active in the USO in Alexandria, VA. She also worked as a secretary for Pennsylvania Central Airlines.
She moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1953 where she worked as secretary and case worker for the American Red Cross to aid service men and women, veterans, and their families.
Galax, VA became her permanent home in 1957. She served as corporate secretary at American Mirror Company where she worked for 34 years, retiring in 1991. For the next 18 years she served as financial secretary, First Baptist Church, Galax, VA.
Glennis was a graduate of Meadows of Dan High School and The Commercial Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. She took night classes at the Department of Agriculture in Washington, D.C.
She became a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Galax in 1957. She served as Sunday School Teacher and worked with the WMU and Girls' Auxiliary.
Other activities include past president of the VFW Auxiliary Post 7568, Senior Regent of Women of the Moose, secretary/treasurer of the Galax Lions Club, and member of the Appalachian Trail Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution.
Glennis is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Marie Ashlock and Dennis Combs, three grandchildren and spouses, Donald Meador, Jr.; Anthony and Meg Meador; Stanley and Courtney Meador; her brother and sister-in-law Arville and Betty Stanley; and seven great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held Friday at 2:00 PM in the First Baptist Church with Dr. Kevin Rosenfeld officiating. Burial will follow in the Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 1:00 PM until time for the service at the First Baptist Church.
