Gary Lyn Sumner, age 72, of Fries, Virginia passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
Born on October 25, 1952 in Fries, Virginia to Duane and Wanda Sumner, Gary spent his life deeply connected to the community that he loved. He graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1975, and from that day forward proudly displayed his Hokie Spirit as a badge of honor.Everyone knew that as soon as you saw that maroon and orange, Gary was on his way.
Gary dedicated many years of service to his beloved hometown, serving on the Fries Town Council as a Council Member, Vice Mayor, and Mayor. His love for Fries ran deep- he believed that in this small town, everyone was family.
Above all, Gary was a devoted husband, father, stepfather, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend.He is survived by his wife Tracy Sumner; daughters Wendy Dixon ( Mark) of Blacksburg, Virginia; Elyse Bryant (Kenneth) of Fort Riley, Kansas; stepsons Nick Jones (Corey) and Jake Jones; brother Blake Sumner (Cathy) of Independence, Virginia; nine grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his oldest and dearest friend Danny Edwards.
In keeping with his wishes, Gary has generously donated his body to science. No services will be held at this time. The family plans to hold a celebration of his life in the coming weeks, with details to be shared once arrangements are made.
Gary will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty-to his family, to his town, and to his Hokies. His love, humor, and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
