Obituary

Fred Lindstrom Jennings known as Freddy Jennings age 86 of Fries, Virginia passed away Tuesday, April 10, 2018 in the Grayson Nursing and Rehab Center.

Fred was born on November 30, 1931 in Fries, Virginia to John (Slab) and Nannie Porter Jennings. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Jeanette B. Jennings; sisters June Hicks, Katherine (Kat) Gunter, Jackie Shupe, brothers Ben Jennings, Marshall (Fotch) Jennings, Porter Jennings, John W, Jennings, Jr., Don Jennings and Allen Jennings; special devoted friend Barbara Morris.

Fred proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the US Army from 1951 until 1956. He was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the army's third highest decoration for valor during the Korean conflict.

Fred later decided he wanted to become a school teacher, so he enrolled at Virginia Tech (VPI) to make this happen. He graduated in 1962, and went to teach for 28 years at Woodlawn and Vaughan schools. He also coached football, baseball and basketball at Vaughan School for several years.

Fred enjoyed fishing, writing, poetry, going to Fries High School football games back in the day, and attending Virginia Tech football games from 1960's up until his last year.

Fred was a good person, always kind and helpful, and he never forgot to give thanks for his blessings. He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his sister Carolyn J. Jones of Fries, Virginia; special nieces Lowana J. Burcham; special nephew Joe Hicks both of Fries, Virginia; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and great-nephews; special loved ones Diane and Tim Leath and family; Jim Ring; Edwin Ring and daughter all of Woodlawn, Virginia; special VT friends Rocky Dowling, Jimbo Byrd and Jimmy Vaughan.

The funeral service will be held Friday, April 13, 2018 at 1:00 PM in the Fries Baptist Church with the Rev. Glenn Gunter officiating and Deacon Blake Sumner as a speaker. Burial will follow in the Fries Cemetery with Military Rites by the Grayson VFW Post 7726. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from six until eight at the Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully request donations be made to the Grayson VFW Post 7726, 115 Klondike Road, Independence, Virginia 24348
