Nichols "E.J."
December 23, 1945 – October 12, 2018
Everett J. Nichols of Advance, NC passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on October 12, 2018 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice, Trellis Supportive Care Facility. He was born on December 23, 1945 to Everett Haze Nichols and Virginia Rose Dixon Nichols. He was preceded in death by both his parents; an infant daughter Laura Suzanne (Little Suzie); a brother, Robert L. Nichols; and two nephews, Robert L. Nichols, Jr. and Steven A. Nichols, all of Galax, VA.
E.J. served in the United States Navy as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVA-42 during the Vietnam Era from 1965-1969. He was a loyal and dedicated lifetime member of VFW Post 8719 in Advance, NC. He had also been a member of the VFW Memorial Honor Guard of Clemmons, NC. He retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, with 33 years of service, having worked at both the Bailey and Tobaccoville Power Plants.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife of thirty-six years, Mary Poe Nichols; three daughters, Amanda M. Nichols of Gainesville, FL; Melissa D. Nichols-Adkins (Roger) of Winston-Salem, NC; and Rhonda L. Fortner of Mocksville, NC; a son, Ron Fortner (Kathy Daywalt) of Advance, NC; three precious grandchildren, Dakota, Dalton, and Delaney Warner; an ex-Son-in Law, Brian Warner, of Advance, NC; a brother, Thomas A. Nichols (Marie); three Sister-in-Laws; Shirley Nichols, Pauline Leonard, and Louise Blevins, all of Galax, VA; a niece, Sheri Hale (Michael) of Hickory, NC; two nephews, Ed NIchols (Carol) of Chesterfield, VA, and TJ Nichols (Melody) of Oklahoma City, OK; several great and great great nieces and nephews, and many special friends.
His service will be held at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home Chapel in Galax, VA on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 3pm. Family will receive friends before the service from 2pm to 3pm. Interment will follow at Edmonds Cemetery in Ennice, NC with full military rights performed by the Independence VFW Post 7726 Memorial Honor Guard. A memorial service is also being planned and will be held at a later date in Advance, NC. Flowers are welcome, however donations may also be made to the Joe H. King Memorial Scholarship Fund at VFW Post 8719 ℅ Beatriz A. O'Brien at 151 Keswick Drive in Advance, NC 27006; VFW 7726 Memorial Honor Guard, P.O. Box 608, Independence, VA 24348; or Kate B. Reynolds, Trellis Supportive Care at 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
The family would like to express a sincere thank you to all of his doctors and nurses from Forsyth Medical Center, the VA Medical Centers at Kernersville and Salisbury, and the nurses at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Trellis Supportive Care in Winston-Salem, for the excellent care and compassion he received.
