Obituary

Ethel Russell Burnette, 90, passed away on August 10, 2012 at her life-long home in Galax. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Burnette of Galax, her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Tommy Calhoun of Sparta, North Carolina and twin grandsons Bobby Calhoun and Ben Calhoun also of Sparta. She is also survived by a sister Ruth Jennings and sister-in-law, Frances Russell, both of Galax, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ethel is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Duard Burnette.

Ethel was a faithful, life-long member of First Christian Church of Galax, serving as treasurer for over 30 years. She was a member of the Galax Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary since 1947. Ethel was also a member of the Galax Friendship Club where she served as President.

Ethel graduated from Woodlawn High School in 1938 and went on to attend Roanoke College with an emphasis in business. She was an accountant for Pless Furniture Co. and served as supervisor of the Twin County Rationing Board during World War II. Ethel and Duard owned and operated the Dairy Bar for over 20 years.

Funeral services are being conducted by Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. Her body will lie in state at First Christian Church in Galax. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 12, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be conducted at First Christian Church on Monday August 13, 2012 at 11:00 AM followed with interment in the Gladeville UM Church Cemetery.
