Professor Eoto Russell Stokes of Tucson, Arizona passed away Tuesday, Feburay 10, 2009 at Peppi's House Hospice at TMC in Tucson, Arizona. Professor Stokes was born in Bluefield, West Virginia on December 3, 1922 to Disciples of Christ missionary parents Rev. H. Gray Russell (formerly of Galax) and Rev. Lois Hasselvander Russell. Eoto grew up in Africa in the Belgian Congo. Professor Stokes earned a BA degree in English at Transylvania University, a BSN in nursing at Vanderbilt University, and a Master's degree in Nursing Education at Indiana University.She was invited to teach in the new nursing program at Purdue University in 1963, ultimately serving as assistant head and director of academic counseling until her retirement in 1988. Upon retiring, she volunteered at the Lafayette Adult Reading Academy until moving to Tucson in 2001 to be near her son, Rev. Gary Stokes. She is survived by her son & daughter-in-law Gary and Susan, granddaughter Anna of Tucson, Arizona; her sister Mary Jeanette Moore of West Lafayette, Indiana; and several aunts. A graveside service will be held Monday, February 23, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the Gladeville Cemetery with Rev. Casey McKenna officating. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Ruby LaRue on Sunday where friends may call.
