Obituary

Elwood Herman Bartlett age 76 of Yorktown, VA passed away peacefully on January 22, 2017 on the Caribbean Island of St Maarten. Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett have been spending the month of January in St Maarten for the past 14 years and have made many close friends who have become family to them.

Mr. Bartlett was born on June 4, 1940 in Galax, VA to Herman Bartlett and Plina Hampton Bartlett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard Elwood Bartlett and brother; C. L. Bartlett.

He proudly served his country in the US Navy as an armed service policeman and in the Seabees.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years Louise Alderman Bartlett of Yorktown, VA; daughter Susan Bartlett Roberts of Galax, VA grandsons; Justin Blackburn of Annapolis MD, Brandon Bartlett of Yorktown VA and Jackson Roberts of Galax VA; brothers and sisters-in-law Herman and Susan Bartlett of Radford VA and Thomas and Tammy Bartlett of Colonial Heights, VA; brother-in- law and sister in law Richard and Joyce Alderman of Horner, WV; sister-in-law Diane Anderson of Bland VA; several nieces and nephews.

He attended Galax High School and Wytheville Community College and earned his Bachelor's degree from Bluefield State College.

He worked in management at Galax Mirror Company, owned and operated Dean's American Service Center and Galax City School Buses. He retired from the Virginia Department of Social Services in Newport News VA where he was a Child Support Investigator.

He was Boy Scout leader of Baywood Troop # 281 and participated in many civic organizations. He loved his wife, his children and his grandchildren deeply and was so grateful for the time he spent with them. Mr. Bartlett never met a stranger and enjoyed talking to anyone. He had wonderful friends and neighbors who would congregate on his front porch. He loved the kids in the neighborhood and enjoyed listening to them talk about their accomplishments or anything going on in their life. He treasured the friendship of his many friends.

The funeral service will be held at Bible Baptist Church Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 3:00 PM with the Reverend Ted Bartlett and the Reverend Sam Bartlett officiating. Burial will follow in the McKenzie Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until service time at the Bible Baptist Church.

Military Rites will be conducted by the Grayson VFW Post 7726. A member from the Virginia Tech Corp of cadets will play taps. The family will receive friends at the home of Susan Bartlett Roberts, the daughter, at 85 Whitney Lane, Galax, VA 24333
