Elmer Clifton Lineberry, Jr., of Ashburn, Virginia passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at the age of 79. Born August 4, 1943 in Austinville, Virginia and raised in Austinville and Pulaski, Virginia, he was the son of the late Elmer and Beatrice Lineberry.
Mr. Lineberry, also known as "E.C.," or "Penny," was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Robinson Lineberry, daughter and son-in-law, Heather Lineberry Lorigo and Ben Lorigo of Clifton, Virginia and son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Sandy Lineberry of Grand Rapids, Michigan; grandchildren Trevor and Evan Lorigo, and Henry, Dylan, and Julia Lineberry; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Wayne and Tina Robinson of Fairfax, Virginia; brother-in-law Terry Friend of Galax, Virginia; aunt Audene "Tootsie" Cox Bogert of Martinsville, Virginia; uncle and aunt Wayne and Susan Cox of Max Meadows, Virginia; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law and mother-in-law James and Dorothy Robinson of Max Meadows, Virginia, and sisters-in-law Nancy Friend of Galax, Virginia and Deborah Robinson of Oak Hill, Virginia; nephew Dr. Manuel Firgau of Galax, Virginia; several aunts and uncles.
Mr. Lineberry attended Jackson Memorial High School and was a member of the first graduating class at Fort Chiswell High School in 1961. He worked at the Virginia Department of Highways while completing his degree in civil engineering from the Virginia Polytechnic and State University (Virginia Tech) in 1968. After graduating he worked for Langenfelder-Raymond Construction Company where he worked on the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel, and later joined the George Hyman Construction Company in Washington, D.C., where he built numerous buildings, including work on D.C. Children's hospital. Mr. Lineberry joined the United States Foreign Service in 1974 in the Foreign Buildings Office. He was stationed in Calcutta and New Delhi, India until 1982, and Lagos, Nigeria from 1982 to 1984. He traveled extensively on behalf of the United States government throughout Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Upon his return to the U.S., he served as a project manager until his retirement from the Foreign Service in 1988.
Mr. Lineberry took an active role in raising his children and encouraging their interests. He was a fixer of everything, a creative builder and inventor, and a talented artist who took the time to teach his talent to others. He was also a talented cook and baker, lover of comics and cartoons, and will be remembered for his kind, but playful spirit.
A viewing will be held Saturday, October 1, 2022 at 2:00 pm at the Vaughan Guynn Funeral Home in Galax, Virginia followed by a graveside service at 3:30 pm at Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery in Austinville, Virginia.
