James Elmer Hanks age 90 of Galax, Virginia passed away Thursday, November 19, 2009 in Waddell Nursing Home.

Mr. Hanks was born on December 27, 1918 in Carroll County, Virginia to Lloyd & Edna Calloway Hanks. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Lyda Alene Hanks.

He is survived by his daughters & sons-in-law Marie Smith, Bonnie & Carroll Coleman, Reta & Bill Coleman, Wanda & Gene Huffman all of Galax, Virginia; sisters Ella Farmer of Hillsville, Virginia and Mary Combs of Martinsville, Virginia; brother Arnold Hanks of Cana, Virginia; nine grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; several nieces & nephews.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 11:00 am in Locust Grove Church of Christ with Guy Russell, Jr. and Craig Embree officiating. Burial will follow in Monta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from seven until nine at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Baywood Rescue Squad or Twin County Hospice.
