Ellen Hawks Lawrence age 76 of Galax, Virginia, a devoted and beautiful wife, a loving, nurturing and supportive mother and grandmother, and a gracious, accepting caregiver to anyone she encountered, passed away peacefully at the Twin County Regional Hospital on Wednesday, November 10th after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mrs. Lawrence was born in Carroll County, Virginia on September 13, 1934 to Coy E. and Clara Bolen Hawks. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by an infant son Charles Grant Lawrence; sister Louise Hawks Davis; brothers Ralph Hawks, Elmo Hawks, Glade Hawks and Ernest Hawks.

She is survived by her husband Cullen Dillard Lawrence of Galax, Va.; sons and daughters-in-law Mark Stephen and Cynthia Lawrence; David Cullen and Cindy Lawrence all of Roanoke, Va.; Timothy Scott Lawrence and special friend Stephanie Suess of Clear Brook, Va.; grandchildren Patrick Lawrence, Nicholas Lawrence, Logan Lawrence and Hayley Lawrence; sister Rubye Hawks Byrd of Galax, Va.; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 11:00 AM in the Hillcrest Baptist Church with the Rev. James Cowley and the Rev. Sidney Beamer officiating. Burial will follow in the Crooked Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from six until eight at Hillcrest Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Hillcrest Baptist Church Building Fund or the Amercian Cancer Society.
